Venti anni dopo la nascita della Alleanza Interstellare, il suo primo presidente è giunto negli ultimi giorni di vita e gli amici di un tempo si riuniscono su Minbar per l'ultimo saluto.

Nel 2279, Sheridan ha scelto di non ripresentarsi come presidente della Alleanza Interstellare. Al suo posto, è stata scelta Delenn, mentre Sheridan ha mantenuto l'incarico di capo dei Ranger.
Sheridan, Delenn, Ivanova, Vir, Garibaldi e Franklin si riuniscono su Minbar nel 2281 in occasione degli ultimi giorni di vita dell'ex capitano della Alleanza Terrestre (Falling Toward Apotheosis).
Nel 2281, Ivanova è un generale della Forza Terrestre. Viene scelta come nuovo capo dei Ranger da Delenn, in sostituzione di Sheridan. Ivanova decide di accettare.
Garibaldi e Lise vivono ancora su Marte nel 2281 ed hanno una figlia. Franklin è ancora capo del dipartimento di Xenobiologia della Alleanza Terrestre.
Dopo l'entrata in funzione del nuovo quartier generale della Alleanza Interstellare su Minbar, Babylon 5 è diventata sempre meno importante, finché non si è deciso per la sua distruzione nel 2281.
Zack Allan ha lasciato la Forza Terrestre, ma alcuni anni dopo ha ripreso servizio, e nel 2281, in occasione dello smantellamento di Babylon 5, è ancora a capo della Sicurezza della stazione.
Ormai al termine della propria vita, Sheridan ritorna nei pressi di Coriana 6 (Into the Fire), dove rivede Lorien, che lo porta con lui oltre il limite della galassia.

Cosa ne sarà di Delenn, Ivanova, Vir e tutti gli altri?
La sparizione del corpo di Sheridan ricorda quella di Valen, il cui corpo non è stato mai ritrovato (Atonement). Che sia stato portato anche lui oltre il limite della galassia?
Per quale motivo non ci sono Soul Hunter nei pressi di Coriana 6 in occasione della morte di Sheridan (che, senza dubbio, ha tutte le caratteristiche per essere un'anima da conservare gelosamente)?
Verrà mai scoperto un metodo per resuscitare Marcus?

Note

Zack ha mantenuto la parola (Objects at Rest) ed è presente negli ultimi momenti prima della distruzione di Babylon 5.
Pare quantomeno strano che una stazione situata in posizione strategica come Babylon 5 sia caduta in disuso nel corso degli anni, specialmente vista l'importanza a livello storico che ha avuto. Pare altrettanto strano che Sheridan, ex presidente della Alleanza Interstellare da soli due anni nel 2281, non sia a conoscenza dello stato di Babylon 5, visto che, senza dubbio, rappresenta un luogo pieno di tanti ricordi ed al quale è sicuramente affezionato.
La profezia di Lady Ladira (Signs and Portents) sulla distruzione di Babylon 5 si è finalmente avverata, anche se non nei termini ipotizzati dalla veggente centauri: la stazione viene fatta esplodere, poco dopo l'uscita dell'ultima navetta dalla baia di attracco.
La battuta di Garibaldi mentre legge il giornale nelle scene iniziali dell'episodio ("Lousy Dodgers!") è uguale a quella detta dallo stesso personaggio in Born to the Purple. Evidentemente non è un buon periodo per la squadra.
Le riprese di questo episodio sono terminate il 5 maggio 1997. La puntata è stata infatti inizialmente prodotta come episodio conclusivo della quarta stagione, quando ancora non si conosceva se sarebbe mai stata prodotta la quinta, ed in seguito posticipata quando la quinta stagione è divenuta una sicura realtà.
Nella scena in cui Sheridan si veste per il suo ultimo viaggio, nel riflesso sullo specchio è possibile scorgere brevemente la formazione di una croce. Secondo J. Michael Straczynski si tratta solamente di una coincidenza.
Oltre ad avere scritto la storia della puntata, J. Michael Straczynski ha anche diretto l'episodio (si tratta della sua prima regia) ed inoltre appare brevemente nella parte conclusiva della puntata nel ruolo del tecnico della manutenzione che si occupa di spegnere le luci della stazione.
Diversi membri dello staff della produzione fanno dei brevi cameo durante questo episodio, tra cui il regista John Copeland ed il co-produttore George Johnsen.
Questa puntata è stata nominata al premio Hugo 1999 nella categoria "Best dramatic presentation". Inoltre, il premio Hugo vinto nel 1996 dalla puntata The Coming of Shadows appare brevemente nella scena ambientata nell'ufficio di Ivanova.

Franklin: There's nothing about that in the literature.
Vir: Apparently it's something they only do certain times of the year as part of their religious ceremonies. You may not believe this, but... it was the most beautiful sound I've ever heard. I couldn't make out the words, but I knew it was full of sadness and... hope and wonder and... terrible... sense of loss. I looked at Londo and, this is the amazing part, there was a... tear running down his face. I said: "Londo, we should leave, I mean, this is upsetting you." He just stood there and... listened. And when it was over he turned to me and he said: "There are 49 gods in our pantheon, Vir. To tell you the truth, I never believed in any of them. But if only one of them exists... then God sings with that voice." It's funny. After everything we've been through, all he did... I miss him.

Ivanova: An expedition to Coriana space found Sheridan's ship a few days later, but they never found him. All the airlocks were sealed, but there was no trace of him inside. Some of the Minbari believe he'll come back someday, but I never saw him again in my lifetime.

Ivanova: Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There would never be another. It changed the future... and it changed us. It taught us that we have to create the future... or others will do it for us. It showed us that we have to care for one another, because if we don't, who will? And that true strength sometimes comes from the most unlikely places. Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope... that there can always be new beginnings... even for people like us.
